Dear All
Thank you for those people who responded to my posting. No useful
information regarding NHS circulars and policies on the subject emerged,
but thank you all the same.
However, I should like to say to one particular person; the whole point of
the posting was to point out something that should be obvious. If you do
not wish to pay expenses, you should be prepared to state as such in
writing. The fact that this doesn't happen is a reflection of the values
of the organisation in question. The equal opportunities query I had about
this policy was not answered. I should also point out that such a policy
makes a mockery of the NHS's policy of not encouraging unnecessary car use
on NHS business.
Library and information work is a profession. Dishonesty is unacceptable
in professional work- let's be straight about this, it's not acceptable in
work in general. Not making clear in the job particulars that expenses are
not paid is a form of dishonesty.
Those employers who behave in this fashion should not be surprised if some
of us won't accept anything less than proper payment for legimiate
expenses.
One way or another I shall ascertain whether or not there is an NHS policy
of not awarding expenses- you can't keep this sort of thing secret.
Finally, to those who decide not to claim expenses when they could do so-
every time you do this, you make it so much easier for the rest of us to
be ripped off.
Thank you all
