David Pearce, Business Development Manager, LSC Group plc
Chris Dodd, Digital Library Manager, University of Central England
Thursday 21 April, 2005, 15.30 - 16.00

image, audio and video resources. These resources can then be delivered
across a network to authorised users wherever they are located, whenever
they need them.
This session will look at the development of a system to provide secure,
controlled, web-based access to primary rather than secondary material
that enriches learning and gives exclusive access to content not

# Connecting Histories - Creating a Culturally Diverse Archive
John Dolan OBE, Assistant Director Libraries & Learning, Birmingham City
Council
Sian Roberts, Head of Archives, Birmingham City Council
Wednesday 20 April, 14.30 - 15.05
Britain today is commonly portrayed as a multicultural nation. However,
the diverse historical experiences which constitute the story of this
'new' Britain are less well known. The history of the West Midlands in the
twentieth century is central to this story. Currently the stories that
make up this history remain largely hidden in archive collections.
This session outlines the development of an innovative initiative to
release the potential of these collections so that connections can be made
between the past and the present and thereby encourage debate about our
shared identities, our common sense of belonging and our multiple
heritages.

Kathy Lemaire, Chief Executive, School Library Association
Thursday 21 April, 10.30 - 11.05
The provision of an effective school library is an important element in
any school, although such services have been under increasing pressure
over the last decade. The School Library Association has been at the
forefront of advocating the value of school libraries and has been closely
involved in the development of the Department for Education and Skills'
new self-evaluation model.
Designed to show that a school library is providing good services for both
students and staff, this new self-evaluation model also looks at how a
school library can make a difference to students' learning outcomes. The
model also provides information for Ofsted as well as the SMT. In this
timely presentation, Kathy Lemaire, Chief Executive of the School Library
Association will introduce the model and explain how it works.
