Adding value: understanding the business background and presenting business
information
Speaker: Sylvia James
Being able to write up and present the results of business research is every
bit as important as doing the research. Any piece of research done by a
business information department needs to distinguish itself by communicating
what has been found, accurately and effectively by presenting a well thought
out response that clearly answers a specific enquiry. In this new basic
level course, the principles of adding value to international business
research by understanding the business concepts that lie behind the research
and ways of presenting the results will be examined in detail.

Basic essentials of change management
Speaker: Ruth Sanderson
Organizations are constantly changing in order to survive, compete or lead
their field. If you're not in control of the change then it can feel
overwhelming. This leads to stress, rejection of the change and poor
performance. All of which have a cost on the business and the individuals
concerned.
If you're involved in leading or implementing change in your organization
then this 1 day course will provide you with some key essentials of good
change management and some common pitfalls which we encourage you to avoid.

to the needs of information specialists required to carry out business

presents particular difficulties for the researcher in terms of the sheer
range of topics it embraces, the complexity of much of its subject matter
and the extensive use of jargon by practitioners.

16 May
Knowledge management: lessons from leaders
Speakers: Sandra Ward, TFPL; Jo Mernagh, Active Dynamics Ltd; Sindy Grewal,
FOS; John Keeble, AON Ltd; Andrew Partridge, DfES; Chris Collison, Centrica
plc
Knowledge management is growing up. After the initial phase of being viewed
as the new boy on the block, possibly with a short life expectancy, many
organisations have acknowledged that effective management of their core
resource - knowledge - is vital to their success. So KM, in various guises
and through diverse approaches, is being developed in all sectors and by
organisations of all sizes. Whilst it is recognised that a core KM principle
is that 'one size does not fit all - that KM is organisation specific,
organisations are learning from the experience of others and adapting
techniques and tools to their own environments. This state of the art
seminar will review current KM initiatives and developments. By exploring
examples, stories and case studies from different sectors, delegates will
gain an understanding of the latest thinking and of practical approaches
that work.

18 May
Digital repositories for research, public and governmental organisations
Speaker: Ron Davies
Institutional repositories of digital materials can be of as much value to
these kinds of organizations as they are to institutes of higher and further
education, the current innovators in this field. This course will explain
the business models that underlie a digital repository, the technology
options that are available and the issues that need to be considered in
developing a repository, including metadata creation, workflow processing,
accessibility and digital preservation.

19 May
Developing a business information classification scheme as stipulated by ISO
15489
Speaker: Jeff Morelli
This one day course offers an introduction into a method of preparing an
information classification scheme based upon business processes, for setting
corporate policies e.g. for records retention. This technique, developed
over the last ten years, solves many of the practical problems faced by
records managers by ensuring that records management policies are completely
matched with business needs and that records management supports the overall
business objectives of the organisation. The speaker will discuss how this
innovative method has solved many longstanding problems not adequately
addressed by 'traditional' methods of retention.

20 May
Strategic information architecture design: building the platform for
corporate delivery
Speaker: Adrian Dale
This one day masterclass introduces information and knowledge managers to
the principles of information architecture design and their impact on
corporate strategy. Information resources are increasingly critical
corporate assets but most organisations fail to capitalise on their value
because the resources are badly organised and relatively inaccessible. Now
more than ever, it is vital that all corporate information resources are
connected into a coherent framework for management, navigation and access.
Information and knowledge managers need to drive this convergence and this
workshop gives them the tools. This workshop will help you make a solid case
for developing a coherent information architecture for your organisation.
With your new understanding, you'll be able to create convincing arguments
for your board discussions and you'll be able to paint a very clear picture
of how you'll deliver early benefits that will repay the investment.

The US financial and corporate sectors
Speaker: Sylvia James
This course is designed for business researchers who need a good
understanding of Wall Street and the development and structure of US
companies as a grounding for their day to day information projects. Wall
Street is described as the world's leading international financial and
business centre and one of the three major global powerhouses in financial
services. The first part of the course focuses on this area and explains how
Wall Street has developed and what is happening today. The second part of
the course is devoted to an overview of US corporations and how to structure
research into US listed and unlisted companies. The course concludes with a
review of the major published sources on US companies.

search engines and covers more specialised areas such as mailing lists,
newsgroups, intelligent search agents, finding people and images and offers
additional hints and tips for better and quicker searching.

26-27 May
Introduction to business research
Speaker: Chris O'Hare
Starting work in a corporate information centre, whether as a solo worker or
within a team, is daunting if you have no previous experience. It takes many
months before you can feel comfortable dealing with clients and answering
enquiries. This is mainly due to a lack of understanding of terminology and
subjects and a lack of knowledge of information availability and sources.
This two day course provides a broad introduction to many areas of business
research and is an ideal starter course.
