Library portals
Corporate information centres and libraries currently face the challenge of
providing access to networked databases, catalogues and vast collections of
electronic texts. Library portals (or 'scholars portals' in the academic
community) facilitate access, optimise use, and leverage investment in these
electronic resources. By means of common web services, federated or
cross-database searching, context-sensitive linking and electronic document
delivery, organisations can integrate external electronic and full text
resources with traditional services and internal databases, providing
personalisation and customisation to their end users. This one-day course
will set out the rational for a library portal, illustrate the functions a
portal should support, explain the underlying technologies, and describe
commercial and open-source solutions

Valuing your information service
Senior librarians and information managers need to be able to justify their
services to senior management within their organisation. This applies to
those working in both the public and private sectors. This one day course
looks at a method of valuing your library and information service (LIS)
based on business valuation techniques. In this way, information
professionals can relate their services directly to reporting line
management on their terms. The course includes an introduction to business
valuation, but the most important part of the day will be a detailed case
study, where delegates will be able to work through an information service
valuation. The course workbook includes a very detailed 25 page bibliography
covering all aspects of LIS valuation.
