'Political ephemera from Latin America and the Commonwealth'
A one-day academic workshop to be held at the Institute of Commonwealth
Studies, School of Advanced Study, University of London, UK
Monday 4th July 2005
The workshop
This workshop is the culmination of a two-year project dedicated to the
cataloguing and promotion of primary political materials from the
Commonwealth and Latin America. Its aim is to bring together academics,
researchers and librarians interested in the holdings both for their
value as research collections and their nature as ephemera.
Materials covered in the papers accepted thus far include the 'Brazil
Popular Groups Microfilm Collection', 'African Ephemera in the Library
of Congress' and 'African Political Posters from Basel', in addition to
pieces on the DISA digital imaging project and on the value of visual
ephemera as a historical source.
Still required for the workshop are papers from academics or librarians
concerned either with Latin American ephemera collections or with the
experience of using Latin American ephemera in the course of conducting
research. Abstracts (maximum 250 words) should be submitted by March
18th to:

The collections
The political ephemera collections (held in the libraries of the
Institute of Commonwealth Studies and the Institute for the Study of the
Americas) consist of over
13,000 items issued over the last fifty years by political parties,
trade unions and pressure groups from over sixty Commonwealth and
ex-Commonwealth countries, and a further 7,000 Latin American items from
the same period from NGOs, international aid organisations, church
groups, parties, unions and pressure groups.
Many of these items are unique, having been produced for immediate
electoral or publicity purposes rather than for posterity. Material is
still being collected, primarily through the downloading of digital
materials. Further details can be found at the website address
