Colleagues
In January I posted a query to the list regarding the use of text
messaging to communicate with students. Here is a summary for the list.
There were only 10 responses to the query most of whom were interested in
what information might be forthcoming!
Two institutions have registered with free text messaging services via the
net and are using it on a very small scale. One indicating using a mobile
to text to the messaging service.
Another library had experience of using texting for a one off message
which was paid for by the university.
One colleague mentioned a CHEST call for expressions of interest in a
product called txttools in July 2003, can't find any further information
on the CHEST website on this one.
One other respondee is in discussion with their LMS provider but any
product in this case was a long way off.
Text messaging seems to have been used by various public library services,
Essex is one a few people have heard of.
Information on three companies providing such services have been forwarded
to me, currently we use Talkingtech for our telephone renewals:
Talkingtech got most mentions and seems well-established, having added an
SMS service to 15 years experience with linking telephony to library and
other systems:

2. Portalify: Developed in Helsinki, the mobile technology capital of the
world, initially to integrate to the Voyager system:

3. Business in Motion: "We also have created a dedicated SMS application
which integrates with Voyager - a major Library management system used in
Universities worldwide. This system is currently in use in the University
of Wales Swansea. Library and Information Services are using the system
for book recalls and reminders. The system is being well received by the
LIS department and Library users alike."

Hope this is informative
