A guide to classifying with Dewey Decimal Classification
This course provides a sound introduction to classifying general library materials using Dewey 22.
WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?
This course is intended for library cataloguers using Dewey Decimal Classification (22nd ed) in their work. It would also be appropriate as a guide to Dewey for reference librarians or subject liasion librarians/readers' advisors.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the end of the day delegates will have
* Considered the history and structure of Dewey
* Examined how to define the subject content of an item
* Practised number building usingthe range of options available in Dewey
* Looked at strategies for deciding between alternative classifications
* Considered using Dewey in MARC21
Practical exercises are used throughout the day to illustrate and reinforce the various techniques being considered.
