                      THE EDUSERV CHEST DATA MESSENGER

            13th October 2005 URL:http://www.eduserv.org.uk/chest/

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
a)  New Agreement for ChildData
b)  PsycINFO - Service Provision update
c)  Cities Revealed - Feedback request
d)  News about RLG Databases
a)  New Agreement for ChildData
--------------------------------
Following requests from the community Chest has negotiated site licence pricing for ChildData, the resource for child care professionals and practitioners, researchers, health and social workers, teachers and trainers, educational psychologists, probation officers, youth workers and students, provided by the National Children's Bureau (NCB).
This new Agreement is about to be signed and is due to go live on 1st November.  The annual Site licence pricing for Higher Education and Research Councils is £1,150 + VAT and for Further Education Colleges it is £550 + VAT.  This agreement is open to the Republic of Ireland - pricing for this sector is either that for HE or FE (see the Agreement Overview for details).
Subscription via Chest automatically gives subscribers membership of the National Children's Bureau.  NCB is committed to providing access with Athens Authentication and is currently working with the Athens team to implement this.
ChildData gives online access to:
*	a catalogue of over 68,000 records of books, reports and journal articles
*	press coverage of issues affecting children, collected since 1996
*	a comprehensive directory of over 3,000 child care organisations
*	details of forthcoming major conferences and events.
ChildData consists of four databases:
1. Catalogue
Records of books, reports and journal articles (over 68,000 entries), all with abstracts, covering the literature on children and young people. It includes the full text of the Highlight series, and all articles from Children & Society, NCB's academic journal.
2. Organisations
Unique database of over 3,000 child care organisations, national and international, fully keyworded, and with website and e-mail links.
3. Children in the News
Abstracted summaries (more than 23,000 records) of newspaper coverage of children's and young people's issues since 1996. It includes law reports, editorials, news stories, features and opinion pieces.
4. Conferences and Events
Over 7,000 entries detailing past and forthcoming national and international events in the child care field, with full contact details.
Full details about the Agreement, including Licence forms, will shortly be available at <http://www.eduserv.org.uk/chest/datasets/childdata/>.  Information about the National Children's Bureau is available at <http://www.ncb.org.uk>.
b)  PsycINFO - Service Provision update
--------------------------------------
The Service Provision pricing for PsycBOOKS from CSA is now available - see <http://www.eduserv.org.uk/chest/datasets/apa/service-provision-fees.xls> for full details of Service Provision pricing from all Service Providers.
c) Cities Revealed - Feedback request
--------------------------------------
Chest currently has a deal with The GeoInformation Group to provide institutions with special pricing for one-off purchases of datasets of digital aerial photographic images, see <http://www.eduserv.org.uk/chest/datasets/cities_revealed/ > . This is due for renewal in June 2006 and we are very eager for feedback from anyone in the community who has experience of purchasing these datasets or who has an opinion on our agreement for it.
If you have purchased or are looking to purchase digitized aerial photography datasets in the future, this is also a great opportunity to influence the shape of any future Chest agreement.
What is your opinion of the Cities Revealed imagery and associated datasets? What is your opinion of the Chest deal? Are there specific issues relating to spatial datasets that you would like to see addressed by a Chest deal?
Any feedback you have on the Cities Revealed imagery, or the Chest offer for it, can be emailed to <mailto:[log in to unmask]>
d)  News about RLG Databases
-----------------------------
Following the investigation which started earlier this year we are unable to form a sufficiently large consortium to subscribe to the databases from RLG <http://www.rlg.org/en/page.php?Page_ID=601>.  We would like to take the opportunity to thank all those sites who provided feedback.  If you have any comments or questions then please contact <mailto:[log in to unmask]>
