Responding to Andrew's point about research, I'm not sure that teachers always know why they expect children to do "research". Or indeed what "research" means. As a librarian and a parent I'm often very irritated by the vagueness of the topics my children are given to research, with very little guidance on what's expected. A recent example for my year 5 children was "Research a topic on Britain from 1930 to the present day."
Just think of the excellent work a librarian could do in this primary school working with teachers and children on research skills/information literacy. (The library is actually run by parent volunteers)
