News from UKeiG: 4th October 2005: For immediate release
UKeiG publishes latest edition of e- newsletter eLucidate
UKeiG - UK eInformation Group release a copy of their members' e-newsletter eLucidate (Volume 2
Issue 5 - September/October 2005)
The September / October 2005 edition of eLucidate leads with an article by John MacColl entitled "The 'Googlezonisation' of Information Provision: the End of the Road for Libraries?" This article explores an idea put forward by the Museum of Media History in Florida in 2004, which speculates the impact of a fictional merger between internet companies Google and Amazon. Would this result in the delivery of customised news to millions of online readers based on their preferences, thus changing and possibly eradicating the role of libraries and information services as we know them? This article is of interest to any information professional, highlighting the valuable role that information services play and exploring how the digitalisation of libraries and 'Googlezonisation' can be controlled and moved forward successfully.
This edition also includes articles on "A Joint Venture to provide an International Resource: 'The Information Literacy Website'" by Debbi Boden. This article outlines the plans for the CILIP CSG Information Literacy (IL) Group. At the forefront of the IL agenda is the creation of an information literacy website and this article discusses the scope of the new website as an international resource (THE information literacy resource) and outlines how this aim will be achieved.
This edition of eLucidate also contains the regular columns including Online, Internet, Intranets, Reference Management and Public Sector. This edition's book reviews are on 'International Yearbook of Library and Information Management, 2004 - 2005: Scholarly publishing in an electronic era.' and ' E-journals: a how-to-do-it manual for building, managing and supporting electronic journal collections.'
Elucidate is available to UKeiG members via the UKeiG website at http://www.ukeig.org.uk/content/public/activities/newsletter/index.html. For those that have requested a PDF version of eLucidate, this has been distributed.
