a) Licensing issues
-------------------
Eduserv Chest is currently looking at the increasing collaboration between Higher Education and Further Education for provision of Foundation degrees. To this end we realize that we may need to consider changes to the way some products are licensed so they are accessible by staff and students of the universities and colleges running these courses. In order to approach suppliers and publishers we need to have a clear idea of the needs of the participating institutions and colleges so would welcome your comments and suggestions for the ways you see of improving the licensing conditions.
While we cannot, of course, guarantee that we can accommodate all your requests, if we have some indication of your needs we can at least address the issues. One of the things we need to know is the approximate numbers of staff who would need to use the resources, particularly if they are not registered at the Higher Education Institution. We also need to know if both Further Education and Higher Education students are participating in the same courses. If this is the case, the students registered with the Further Education College would not automatically have the right to use the resources so additional licensing arrangements need to be made, for which there would be an additional charge. We therefore need to know the approximate numbers (actual and percentages) of such students.

b) EBSCO reminder
------------------
Sites with current subscriptions to EBSCO databases are reminded that they should all complete new licence forms to continue their subscriptions from 1st October. Annual invoicing is due now so it would be helpful if sites could complete and return the new forms as soon as possible (thanks to those who have already done this). The forms are available at <http://www.eduserv.org.uk/chest/datasets/ebsco/> (for Higher Education) and <http://www.eduserv.org.uk/chest/datasets/ebsco-fe/> (for Further Education Colleges).
Chest is awaiting pricing for the new Business database - Business Source Complete. The new database will include (in addition to the content from Business Source Premier) Kluwer Academic Journals and John Wiley & Sons journals, as well as full text of books and monographs and author profiles for the top 10,000 most cited authors. It is hoped that this database will be available by the start of the new agreement year (1st October). Sites wanting to upgrade their subscriptions from Business Source Elite or Business Source Premier will be able to pay the difference in cost between the two databases.

c) Try ABES now with no commitment
-------------------------------------
ABES from Taylor and Francis is a unique electronic reference tool for English Studies.
ABES covers secondary literature in English Studies in the widest possible sense, including subject areas such as Language and Linguistics, Cultural Studies, Literary Studies and Film Studies.
ABES also embraces fields including the history of ideas, the visual arts, American Studies, Media Studies, and Women's Studies. Unlike other bibliographies, ABES does not try to list every single publication that comes out. Rather, its goal is to present users with selective bibliographies that address their specific requirements and refer only to relevant material of the highest quality.
Sites with an interest in ABES now have a great opportunity to try the service until 31st May 2006 with no ongoing commitment, thanks to a one year extension to the Eduserv Chest Agreement with Taylor and Francis.
Whereas Chest pricing would previously have required a multi-year commitment, you can now have access to ABES for as little as £600 per annum with no commitment to further payments.
It is likely the requirement for multi-year commitments will be re-introduced next year, so act now to take advantage of this opportunity.

d) Considering Keesings? - have your say
----------------------------------------
Keesing's Record of World Events Online provides a database of monthly reports in full text exactly as they appeared in Keesing's Record of World Events from up to 42 years ago.
The Eduserv Chest Agreement for Keesings <http://www.eduserv.org.uk/chest/datasets/keesings/> expires on 30th September 2005 and currently licensed Sites have already praised the product for its versatility and wide ranging appeal and offered very valuable feedback as we approach renewal.
However, we would also like to hear from any Site which has considered or is considering purchasing a licence for Keesings as this is a great chance for you to influence any future offering we might have.
Were you aware of our Agreement for Keesings?
What do you think of the price?
What do you think of the terms and conditions?
Is there anything in the Agreement that would keep you from purchasing through Chest?
What could we do to make the Agreement more attractive to you?
Please email Tim Hobday, <mailto:[log in to unmask]> with any responses or feel free to call on 01225 403225.
We would be very interested to hear from any Site, even if it is just to register your interest in the product with us. All feedback is very gratefully received.
