Loan limits for different students
Thank you to all those who responded to my query about loan limits for
different categories of students. I received responses from 22
institutions and I have tried to summarise below.
Average no of loans Highest Lowest
Undergraduates 13 30 8
Final Year UGs 14 30 8
Taught PGs 19 40 10
Research Students 23 40 10
Staff 27 50 15
Almost all institutions that responded (91%) allowed Postgraduate students
to have more items than Undergraduates, with an average figure of 6 extra
items per student.
Only 5 institutions (23%) differentiated between final year undergraduates
and other undergraduates, with an average of 5 extra items in these cases.
Where final year students were allowed more items, the number was usually
the same as that for taught postgraduates.
The most frequently quoted numbers of loans allowed for undergraduates
(years 1 and 2) was 10 and 12, the most frequently quoted for both final
year undergraduates and postgraduates was 15.
