a) New CSA Collections Agreement
---------------------------------
For the past few months Eduserv Chest and CSA have been in negotiation
for an Agreement for subscription to different collections of CSA
proprietary databases. These negotiations have resulted in pricing for
4 separate collections, with discounts if sites subscribe to more than
one collection.
The Collections are in the areas of Arts & Humanities, Social Sciences,
Technology, and Natural Sciences. If you subscribe to 2 collections
there will be a 5% discount, there is 10% discount on three collections
and 20% discount if you subscribe to all four collections. If you want
to subscribe to other CSA Proprietary databases which are not in the
collections you will be eligible for a 10% discount on the additional
databases (provided you subscribe to at least one collection).
The content of each collection can now be seen on the Chest web site at
<http://www.eduserv.org.uk/chest/datasets/all-csa/>, together with
pricing details. If you have difficulty in accessing the pricing pages
(these are accessible only by sites with .ac.uk addresses) please
contact Chest <mailto:[log in to unmask]>.
The new Agreement is for 3 years, starting on 1st September 2005.
Trials are available by contacting Dan Dyer <mailto:[log in to unmask]> or
Anne Taylor <mailto:[log in to unmask]> at CSA.
b) Justis Law Databases
-----------------------
The new year of the agreement for Justis databases starts on 1st July so
the Chest web site has been updated with pricing for up-front payment
for 2 years to the end of the agreement period (30th June 2007) (you can
still commit for the 2 years and pay annually). You can subscribe to a
selection of law databases covering Case Law, European Information,
Statute Law, Press Releases and Parlianet. One of the newest databases
is called 'The English Reports' which brings together all the important
English case reports from 1220 to 1873. Sarah Carter, Law Librarian at
the University of Kent, has provided information about the student
experience with the English Reports:
"Our students are often surprised when they have to consult 'old' cases,
particularly so when they are faced with an obscure citation which they
can't identify. All the more so when they are told..[they must refer to
cases in a series we do not hold]. Our students are thrust into [the
English Reports] in their early weeks, when they're asked to look at
Stilk v Myrick (1809) 2 Camp. 317, 170 ER 851. This case was approved in
Williams v Roffey [1991] 1 QB 1 which they are studying in their
Obligations course. They have to get used to the idea that pre-1865
cases are 'old cases' and that the citation (which usually does not
include the ER reference) needs looking up in the English Reports and
that they must come look for it on the library shelves. The pages for
often-cited cases are noticeably well-thumbed in our set of ER."
Full details, including pricing for all the databases and the licences,
are available at

c) STAT!Ref
-------------
The second year of the two year agreement for STAT!Ref starts on 1st
August. STAT!Ref is an intuitive collection of electronic resources for
healthcare professionals. It enables users to cross-search a wealth of
core medical information such as medical and pharmacology reference
titles, evidence-based clinical guidance tools and a comprehensive
collection of nursing and dental resources.
Teton Data Systems (TDS), the providers of the STAT!Ref collection of
electronic resources for healthcare professionals, and Thompson Henry
Limited conducted the first UK based Advisory Meeting held June 2-3 that
led to a better understanding of medical informatics needs in the UK
market.
This knowledge-sharing event garnered ideas about healthcare information
needs in general and how TDS can better address these needs to improve
STAT!Ref in order to extend its reach in the global market.
"This Advisory Group meeting provided us with an opportunity to better
understand the needs of the UK medical librarians, and the feedback
concerning electronic resources and content was invaluable," stated Dean
Serra, Director of Sales with Teton Data Systems.
Steve Thorpe, the UK-based representative with Thompson Henry Limited (a
STAT!Ref reseller) commented, "This focus group meeting allowed the
participants to share their varied experiences and knowledge, and they
genuinely appreciated having the opportunity to exchange new ideas
concerning the delivery of electronic medical resources."
Helen McEvoy, Subject Librarian at The John Rylands University Library,
the University of Manchester added, "We were delighted to host this
event at the University of Manchester. This advisory group meeting
provided the opportunity for all participants to gain greater mutual
understanding of the expanding role STAT!Ref can play in the delivery of
electronic medical resources in the UK. In addition, the session
provided a unique forum for UK medical librarians to share ideas with
STAT!Ref on the direction of future content."
Hosted by The John Rylands University Library, in Manchester, the
meeting focused on medical librarians' perspectives of how electronic
information resources could be better delivered in the future, and
included the following participants:
Linda Dorrington - Team Leader (Medicine) Faculty Support Services,
Central Library, Imperial College London
