GETTING THE MOST OUT OF GOOGLE(tm)
6 February 2006, London
Everyone's a Google(tm) expert already right? Wrong.
Google is without doubt the information professional's general purpose search engine
of choice but many of us simply search by subject terms. This often brings back good
results but not always. Are we missing a trick?
How much of this is because the information we are looking for doesn't exist and how
much of it is because we just don't use Google(tm) effectively - our result is on the
200th page of Google(tm) hits when most of us can't be bothered to look that far. How
about using techniques that will bring the most relevant hits to the top of the list?
Maybe even get the answers to quick reference enquiries without having to click
through to the websites?
BENEFITS OF ATTENDING
This workshop will drive you up the Google(tm) learning curve at speed but not so fast
that you lose track and revert to simply using subject terms.
BY THE END OF THE EVENT PARTICIPANTS WILL HAVE:
· excellent knowledge of basic Google(tm) and have gone beyond simple subject terms searching
· an ability to use "Advanced Search" with confidence and, indeed, do things that "Advanced Search" cannot do
· knowledge of non-Google tools that help with a Google search
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
· anyone who is currently a big user of Google(tm) but is simply throwing subject terms into the search box
· anyone who uses Google(tm) daily but thinks that they might be missing something
· anyone who needs quality time with Google(tm) that just cannot be achieved on the enquiry desk
· anyone who is new to the internet and wants to learn Google(tm) fast but thoroughly
This workshop will be of relevance to library and information staff in all types of
library from public to academic, business to special.
WORKSHOP LEADER: TERRY KENDRICK
Terry, originally a librarian, is a marketing and information consultant who since
1987 has undertaken marketing and information projects in seventeen different

around adding value to basic skills regardless of library type.
