Dear Colleagues,
At Reading University Library we recently began using three 3M V-Series
SelfCheck units to circulate stock. We also have the MediaCheck units
which will enable the issue of multimedia items such as Videos via these
units.
Currently the Library has 500 multimedia items held in ProLoc cases for
security purposes, including Videos, DVD's and CD-ROM's.
I would be grateful for any insights anyone has regarding the transfer of
the loan system for these types of multimedia from a staff mediated system
to a self-service model. Of most interest are the challenges involved in
moving the multimedia out of Pro-loc cases and onto the open shelves
without compromising security.
I would also be interested to hear from anyone who has managed the issue
of multi-part items e.g. books containing CD-ROM’s or other items, using
self-service units. Reading University Library staff currently check that
all parts are present on issue and return but we aim to loan and return
these items via the self-service units in the future, as long as we can
maintain the security and integrity of the materials.
Regards, Nick Hollis
