Developing a Librarians Group for the Social Sciences: The Future of ASSIGN
ASSIGN
ASSIGN (Aslib Social Sciences Information Group and Network) was formed in 2000 from the amalgamation of two existing smaller librarians' groups.
From the outset its aim was to create a self-help group by and for social science librarians and information professionals. Specifically the group would:
* Provide opportunities for networking and self-development
* Offer a forum for communication
* Create a network of cooperation and a forum for discussion about emerging issues in social science librarianship.
* Cover the full range of social science subjects
* Include libraries/ information units in all sectors (government, commercial, voluntary sector, academic sector)
* Include information workers/ librarians at all stages of their careers.
Although we acknowledge our gratitude to Aslib for the level of support they have provided us over a number of years, we now feel that their recent changes, in particular the shift from being a charitable organisation to a private company, mean that it would be more appropriate for ASSIGN to break away to become an independent group. We are aware that many of our members are from not-for profit organisations, such as educational establishments and charities, and becoming an independent association seems appropriate.
We are also faced with the situation, that as many of the committee members are based at institutions which have decided not to renew their Aslib membership, they would be forced to stand down at the AGM, threatening the survival of the group.
Please read the attached proposal and constitution. This will be discussed and voted upon at our AGM on the 25th April 2005. Note if you are an ASSIGN member who is unable to attend this meeting you may send a formal vote, either in support or against the proposal via email to Heather Dawson, ASSIGN Secretary by 25th April 2005. If you are not currently an ASSIGN member, but would like to comment on the proposals for a new group, or offer your support for it, you may also send your messages to Heather Dawson at [log in to unmask]
