Dear Colleagues
Can I point you all to the very interesting article in this months Library
and Information Update "Access denied: catalogue accessibility for VIPs".
March 2005, Vol 4(3) pp. 32-33
This exposes the fact that most catalogue software is not disability access
compliant and fails to come up to WAI level AA standards (Web Accessibility
Initiative) .
http://www.w3.org/WAI/ Homepage http://www.w3.org/. The article reviews
accessibility of public library catalogues but the points made are pertinent
to all of us.
We also need to start thinking how accessible any info skills material we
have produced is.

No,
But I have done a study of visually impaired users of e-services typical of
those used by public libraries if it helps.
http://eprints.rclis.org/archive/00002493/
One thing to be careful of is that blind people using screen readers do not
use the systems in the same way as visually impaired people. If you are
visually impaired and use magnification you can still scan the page in
parallel.
The way you suggest is worth getting potential suppliers to demonstrate with
new products (or upgrades)
(i.e. get someone local who is blind to try it out with their own
equipment!)

Dear All,
Have you tested an Informs tutorial with a screen reader? Or had a user
with a visual impairment tried to use it? Or tested it for accessibility
in any other way?
Or do you know of any work in this area?
If the answer to any of these is yes, then please do get in touch. I will
summarise any findings for the lists. I can't see anything on the Informs
site, or in either list archive.
Apologies for any inconvenience caused by cross posting, and thanks in
advance,
Keith
