Couldn't agree with you more! I tried with colleagues to get the the LA
to allow a group to be set up a few years ago and we gave up in despair!
CILIP could easily canvas members to see what numbers would join such a
group. I'm sure there would be representatives from all sectors.

Surely information literacy is on the agenda in all sectors. It is great
that CSG have it as a core interest but it would be so easy to ignore
the work of other areas. I am in FE and have been interested in this
area for over 15 years. Colleagues in Health libraries and schools have
also evidently been very active. Now UPdate has an edition devoted to IL
largely from an HE perspective. Perhaps it is time for a joint CILIP
group? It is an area too ignored by government and funding bodies in
their enthusiasm for the information society.

I have had several enquiries asking what CSG and CSG IL stands for.
CSG is the CILIP Community Services Group. When CILIP decided that a
new Information Literacy specialist group did not fit into their planned
subgroup organisational structure they suggested that we should become a
sub group of CSG. At first glance this may seem a strange place for IL
to sit. However, core to CSGs work is social inclusion and as IL and
social inclusion are intrinsically linked the structure was the best
available option for those interested in being members of a professional
group that would further the interests of IL practioners.
A number of people have now joined CSG because of the groups IL agenda
and so that they can participate in the CSG IL subgroup. CILIP have
recognised the importance of IL and have given the subgroup the remit of
moving the IL agenda forward on their behalf. The main objectives of the
group are:
To provide a forum for discussion
To disseminate information about local, national and international
initiatives To encourage the publication of articles, both nationally
and internationally, which share new ideas, initiatives and experience
To encourage collaboration and support across all sectors of the
profession To promote the ideal of Information Literacy in all sectors
To highlight and promote good practice
