As promised a summary of the responses sent to me when I asked what software might offer similar functions to INFORMS - many thanks to all who replied. It was also interesting to hear more about the long-term possibilities for development of INFORMS via this list.

Hi Judy,
You might want to contact James Osborne at UBHT trust who is working on Do Once & Share projects around finding, evaluating etc evidence for medical students/junior docs & trying out a range of different software including microsoft producer. See http://www.ubht.nhs.uk/evidence-in-practice/

The OU online course on Information literacy Mosaic does just that. Of course it is a "commercial" course.

We have successfully used MS FrontPage to do exactly this. When setting
up a web page the frames templates give the option of "Contents" on the
left and "Other" on the right. The left hand frame is pointed at any
page you wish - e.g. instructions - and the right hand frame is pointed
at a web page.

Hello Judy
We have been reluctant to go down the Informs route because of the lack
of contractual support. In theory you could use any HTML development
product. We use Perception as you can use HTML to customise the screens and you have a powerful assessment engine to store and analyse
questions. We have adopted an open new window (in a defined area) as
the frame split can be altered in Informs so it is still easy to loose
the database screen. It is to early to tell if this has been a success
as only one guide has been produced this way and no further volunteers
so the staff perception is that it is a complicated task. Still they
may have felt that about Informs!

Hello, Judy, we use Camtasia and Microsoft producer in addition to Informs. They are not the same as they do not provide live access but thought you may be interested. We use Microsoft Producer to record introductions to the library for off campus students - PowerPoint in right hand window, presenter in left hand window. they are large files so we have put them on a CD rather than via the web. Camtasis provides a voice over explaining what is happening on the screen and records the mouse moving and typing eg in a database, library catalogue again to support off campus students,
