Dear Colleagues,
I do struggle with the term information literacy - not through any deep
consideration of definition or meaning which I leave to colleagues - but
simply in using the term to write documents about it. It occurs to me
that we do need a glossary of accepted terms? I use "information
literacy" to talk about the broad topic, and then when it comes down to
specific skills / capabilities "information literacy skills" which
sounds clumsy and of course very similar to information skills.
With Best Wishes
Matt

Subject: Definition of IL
Dear Philip,
Grassian argues IL is very similar to bibliographic instruction (BI)
(developed into information skills and then IL) and that it has been
happening since 1960s in US. However does argue that it builds on BI as
attempts to balance concepts and mechanics with good teaching practice.
If I remember correctly she does provide a good definition of both. The
reference is:
Building on bibliographic instruction: our strong BI foundation supports
a promising IL future
Authors: Grassian, E.
Source: American Libraries, 2004, 35, 9, 51 - 52
I hope that helps,
Ruth
