From August, University of Plymouth will be using SED and passing the
links to
Patrons (Users). Unfortunately, our ILL software does not yet support
the alternative delivery address feature offered by BLDSC - when it
does,
we will be making full use of it!
We (the ILL Office staff) have found it essential to use Adobe Acrobat
7.0
www.adobe.com) rather than 6.0, as the authentication process is much
simpler!
We still have to address the "education" issue and produce in-house
leaflets.
To 'inform' us about likely problems we are trialling delivery with a
small
group over the next 6 weeks, and also asking our Academic Support
colleagues to
include SED in their induction sessions.
As an interim, we are currently using SED as an alternative to post, and
print
the documents in the ILL office. This is a slow and laborious process
as the print
rate is currently 3 pages per minute (HP Laserjet) (and there was no
significant
increase in speed with a 2MB state of the art Cannon!)
If you are to print locally, you must allow for this slow rate (and the
increase costs
of paper, toner and staff time) and the 'tying up' of a printer.
Additionally, you need
in place a procedure to ensure documents are deleted from your inbox AND
from "My digital
editions" after printing.
Although delivering SED to the user appears to pass the printing cost to
the end-user,
(a hidden cost when using postal delivery) they do have the option of
not printing.
The image stored in "My digital image" is valid for 3 years and can be
looked at as
often as necessary. Making sure this is understood will be one facet of
education about SED.

Hello all
We are also looking at providing the British Library's SED of ILLs to
our borrowers. I have noticed that quite a few libraries print the
articles for the borrowers, but I am concerned about the time and cost
that this will incur. Are there any libraries who forward the email and
link to their borrower to print themselves? How effective is this? Has
anyone experienced any problems with SED as a whole? I would be grateful
for any feedback. Thank you Cari Johnson Library Assistant Harper Adams
