Umbrella Conference, University of Manchester 30 June – 2 July 2005
ELG’s contribution to this year’s Umbrella Conference focuses on the Key
Issue of Evidence-based Practice and Policy.
Evidence-based practice began in medicine, but has spread across many areas
of social policy and practice, especially education. Whatever aspect of
education you are concerned with, you cannot escape the influence of this
issue. Whatever your role, whether as information practitioner supporting
teachers, children or lecturers, or as a parent or student user of education
services, the influence of evidence-based practice in education will affect you.
ELG has sponsored three speakers, in joint sessions with LIRG and SLG,
within the Evidence-based Practice and Policy strand.
Josephine Kavanagh from the EPPI-centre# will provide an overview (alongside
the LIRG speaker, past president Maggie Haines). The relationship between
research and policy making will be explored by Dr Philip Davies from the
Government Chief Social Researcher’s Office, whilst LIRG speakers examine
research and teaching. Finally, LISE Chair Alan Bradwell will describe the
practicalities of working with REEL# at the EPPI-Centre, alongside a view of
school-based practice from Caroline Wavell of SLG.
