Well I think 7 is about the number of sub numbers we have with OUP!

A couple of years ago I thought we had got it all sorted out and streamlined
(after much agonising!) but the problem arose again last month when I
attempted to get usage stats from their website - I don't think I ever did
get to the bottom of which were the definitive stats; will probably try
again later when I can face it!

Subject: Re: CHEST Subscription Gracing

Hi,

It seems that a lot of the subscription problems that arise are due to the
fact that publishers use addresses to identify libraries. Problems caused by
slight variations in address from year to year lead to, for example:

1. Multiple subscription numbers for the same library at the same publisher
(e.g. we have 7 or so subscription numbers for 80+ OUP journals though we
really only use 3 different delivery addresses - one of which is our agent's
US consolidation address)

2. Subscription numbers that change from one year to the next and lead to
loss of online access and the need to re-register (as in the Chest example
below)

3. Difficulties agreeing on an institution's subscriptions for a publisher's
Big Deal

If only there was a unique number that could be assigned to a library, like
an ISSN is for a serial.

There is!

ISO 15511:2003 Information and documentation ? International Standard
Identifier for Libraries and Related Organisations (ISIL):

"The purpose of ISO 15511:2003 is to define and promote the use of a set of
standard identifiers for the unique identification of libraries and related
organizations with a minimum impact on already existing systems."

(In the UK this is BS ISO 15511:2003)

The Registration Authority for ISO 15511 is the Danish National Library
Authority - see http://www.bs.dk/isil

The site says that "Member bodies of ISO implementing this standard shall be
responsible for the assignment of identifiers for libraries and related
organizations within their borders. The ISIL shall be administered by
appropriate national agencies whose role is widely accepted in the library
sector within the country. The Registration Authority will contact the
national body of ISO if any doubt about which body is to run the national
agency."

Presumably in the UK that means British Standards and the British Library?
Does anyone out their know their ISIL yet?!

Happy New Year!
