Strategic Planning for Not-for Profit Publishers - making the most of your
publishing business
Date: 3-4 April 2006
Venue: Old Mill and Swan, Minster Lovell, Oxfordshire
Places are limited to 16.
Overview:
For many learned societies and other professional organisations, publishing
is an important, but not dominant activity. The publishing programme is
expected to serve the wider mission of the organisation in a variety of
ways. Often it is an important revenue stream; invariably it is seen as a
way of maintaining the organisation's visibility with its membership and in
the wider world. STM publishing is changing rapidly with the advent of
widespread electronic distribution. New channels and business models are
creating new revenue streams and threatening existing ones. Open Access and
'Big Deals' are but two examples. This new environment presents special
challenges to NFP publishers.
Learning Objectives:
* Be better informed about the opportunities and threats presented by
the electronic publishing environment.
* Have the necessary skills to achieve a better understanding of your
organisation's mission and the role of publishing within it.
* Formulate an appropriate strategy, and implement a strategic plan.
Who Should Attend:
This workshop is aimed at Senior Executives with responsibility for the
management, future direction and shape of the publishing business of a small
to medium-sized NFP organisation in which publishing is not the sole or
major activity, as well as university presses. It is assumed that
participants will have at least 3-5 years' publishing experience with P&L
responsibility.
Facilitators: Mary Waltham, Peter Shepherd (see biographies online)
