Wiley Expands STM Publishing in Asia
Announces New STM Publishing Director for Asia Pacific
Hoboken, N.J., November 29, 2005 –John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
(NYSE: JWa) (NYSE: JWb), announced today plans for the
creation of a new scientific, technical, and medical (STM)
publishing program to be located at Wiley’s Asian
headquarters in Singapore.
Wiley currently has three STM publishing programs located in
Hoboken, New Jersey; Chichester, England; and Weinheim,
Germany. The Asian STM publishing program, which is
scheduled to launch in early 2006, will become an integral
part of Wiley’s global STM operations and will further
enhance the role of Wiley Asia, the company’s already
extensive sales and marketing presence in the region. The
new program will publish book and journal content from Asia
for a worldwide audience, embracing Wiley’s global STM
publishing strategies and standards to benefit from Asia’s
recent emergence as an important source of STM content.
Another goal of the initiative is to strengthen coverage of
Asian content in existing Wiley publications from the U.S.,
U.K., and Germany.
“We look forward to expanding our STM editorial presence in
Asia,” said Steve Miron, Vice President, Wiley Asia and
General Manager for Global STM Books. “It is an area where
we see tremendous publishing and market opportunities.”
Wiley plans to increase the number of Asia-based members on
the editorial boards of its journals and major reference
works, and to strengthen and expand relationships with Asian
scientific communities and scholarly societies. The company
has already begun to venture into Asia-based journal
publishing with the Chinese Journal of Chemistry, which is
being distributed on behalf of the Chinese Chemical Society;
Chemistry: An Asian Journal, a new title to be published
jointly by Wiley-VCH and the German Chemistry Society
(GDCh), and the Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Indian
Chemical Societies; and The Chemical Record, which is
managed by Wiley’s Tokyo office.
In connection with the expansion of this program, Wiley
announced that Ann-Marie Halligan would be assuming the
newly created position of STM Publishing Director, Asia
Pacific. She will be based in Wiley Asia headquarters in
Singapore, beginning February 2006. Ms. Halligan, who began
her career at Wiley in 1985, most recently held the position
of Editorial Director for Wiley’s Communications and
Engineering Technology and Statistics program located in the
company’s offices in Chichester. In the coming year, Wiley
will develop an editorial staff in the region through the
appointment of editors in China, Taiwan, Japan, and India.
“We are delighted that Ann-Marie Halligan will assume the
position of STM Publishing Director,” Miron added. “She has
expert knowledge of Wiley publishing systems, having built a
number of successful book and journal publishing programs
over the years, and is ideally suited to this new position.”
The majority of Wiley’s STM content is available both in
print and online through Wiley InterScience, the company’s
online publishing platform. Since its commercial launch in
January 1999, Wiley InterScience
(www.interscience.wiley.com) has earned its reputation as a
world-leading Internet resource for quality research
material promoting discovery across the spectrum of
scientific, technical, medical and professional endeavors.
Today Wiley InterScience features a vast reservoir of must-
have content from almost 2000 journals, books, reference
works, databases, and Current Protocols laboratory manuals.
