Institute of Physics Publishing is delighted to announce what is another
key development for New Journal of Physics (NJP) and its open-access
publishing model. The Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) in the UK
has confirmed an extension to its current funding agreement with the
journal to 31 December 2005. This means that all staff members of eligible
higher and further education institutions (
http://www.iop.org/EJ/journal/-page=extra.jisc/NJP) in the UK can publish
work that they submit to NJP before the end of 2005 without charge. NJP
sits alongside journals from five other publishers in successfully securing
funding following the second round of JISC's Open Access programme (see the
JISC press-release,
http://www.jisc.ac.uk/index.cfm?name=pr_successful_publishers_060105)
Since the first round of JISC funding ten months ago, NJP has seen
substantial growth within the UK physics community. Article submissions and
publications from UK-affiliated authors have risen by more than 300% and
article downloads from UK users have increased by over 70%. 2004 also saw a
significant jump in the journal's Impact Factor to 2.48.
'With the rapid growth in open-access options, the ability to fund
publication charges has become an important consideration in the decision
where to publish', said Ken Lillywhite, Journals Business Director at
Institute of Physics Publishing. 'By funding publication charges for New
Journal of Physics, JISC has effectively removed this barrier for every
British scientist working in a HEFCE-funded institution. Since JISC's
decision to offer financial support for authors publishing in our journal,
we have received many more UK papers from scientists working in British
universities. We look forward to further growth in 2005.'
Launched in 1998 by the Institute of Physics and Deutsche Physikalishes
Gesellschaft, New Journal of Physics is an open-access, electronic-only
research journal covering the whole of physics. The journal operates a
funding model based upon author article publication charges.
