R.R. Bowker’s Ulrich’s Resource Linker™ Now
Enables Libraries to Link from Google Scholar
New Providence, N.J. – July 13, 2005 – R.R. Bowker, a leading provider of
bibliographic information, today announced that users of its Ulrich’s
Resource Linker tool for integrating library e-resources are able to link
from Google Scholar to full-text content within their collections.
Google Scholar has attracted widespread attention since its launch in
November 2004 as a breakthrough project to benefit academic and research
libraries. The project allows Google Scholar users to link to electronic
versions of journals accessible through library collections. Any library
using OpenURLs and Google Scholar’s conditions can join the program at no
cost to the library.
Ulrich’s Resource Linker (www.ResourceLinker.com) is a link resolver that
enables library patrons to easily connect to a library’s serials holdings
by following a few simple links. The product, which fully supports the
official new NISO OpenURL 1.0 standard, is a fully hosted solution. This
means that the library’s staff is not burdened with the set-up,
maintenance and updating of a link server, nor are they tasked with
keeping track of all of the URL and metadata changes in the various
collections they hold in their catalogs. Moreover, Ulrich’s Resource
Linker also provides COUNTER-compliant usage statistics for journals, a
crucial feature for academic and research libraries.
“Google Scholar is one of the most exciting new projects impacting the
academic and research library community,” said Boe Horton, senior vice
president and general manager of the library division for New Providence,
N.J.-based R.R. Bowker. “Ulrich’s Resource Linker is the ideal gateway
that transports searchers from source citations in Google Scholar to the
full-text content within the library’s own collection. Bowker’s objective
and unbiased position in the marketplace gives librarians confidence that
our link resolver is vendor-neutral and offers linking to the library’s
resources, regardless of aggregator, publisher, subscription agent or ILS
system.”
According to Horton, Ulrich’s Resource Linker is available to libraries
with the most flexible pricing model of any link resolver currently in the
marketplace, and can also be purchased at significant discounts for
library consortia as well as any existing customers of ulrichsweb.com or
the Ulrich’s Serials Analysis System, two other Bowker serials products
for libraries. “This approach to pricing makes it affordable for libraries
of all sizes to match their collections to a single service that best fits
their budget and user communities’ needs,” said Horton.
