Subject: NLH update
NATIONAL LIBRARY FOR HEALTH UPDATE
As it’s Health Libraries Week, it seems appropriate to update you on some recent developments.
Staffing
We’re delighted to have Sharon Hadley, Effective Practice Facilitator at North Bristol NHS Trust, join us on a 6 month secondment. Sharon is taking the role of Training and Promotion Facilitator, whilst Fran Wilkie is on maternity leave. Sharon started with us on 1 November 2005 and has hit the ground running. Some of the areas Sharon will be working on include:
- evaluation of Health Libraries Week
- planning new promotional materials
- the new For Librarians pages on the NLH web site
- planning new training activities
National Service Framework
A framework document is now available on www.library.nhs.uk/forlibrarians and consultation will begin shortly. The framework defines seven core areas of service with each area containing core and developmental components. The core areas of service will provide the basis for national standards for library and information services. The process of developing standards will be aligned with the Healthcare Commission ‘Standards for Better Health’ and the International Standards for Quality in Healthcare (ISQua), and will be a consultative and inclusive process.
Details for the consultation will be published this week.
For Librarians pages
We’re working on new pages for the For Librarians section of the NLH web site. This will include information on the NLH programme as well as information to support professional development, service improvement and community involvement. More information will be added over November and December. In the meantime, new pages are currently available on the NLH programme, the NeLH-NLH migration, the libraries directory project, the National Service Framework. Promotion and training information is being migrated from DLnet.

Health Libraries Week evaluation
We will be in touch soon asking you to help us evaluate this year’s campaign – we need to know what worked and what didn’t work. What materials and activities should next year’s campaign focus on? It’s likely next year’s campaign will be organised quite differently and we’re pleased to announce we’ll be working closely with CILIP Health Libraries Group. We’re also keen to involve NHS library staff in campaign planning and will be asking for expressions of interest during the evaluation. To make sure your views are heard please reply to the survey when you receive it.
Health Libraries Week materials
We appreciate many of you experienced difficulties obtaining NLH materials for Health Libraries Week and for this, we apologise. Despite months of organising, a few gremlins got in the system and caused a few problems. There are still lots of internal mail envelopes left. We’ve also had a new batch of Primary Care Question Answering Service leaflets just arrived.
Best of luck with your Health Libraries Week activities – don’t forget to send us your photos and stories.
Regards
Anne Brice, Acting Head of Service, NLH
Alison Turner, Leadership Development Manager, NLH
