If you are using apt-rpm, that is true -- apt-rpm cannot cope with
multiple packages of exactly the same name being installed
simulataneously, even if they are builds for different architectures.
However, the packages can happily co-exist on the system -- I actually
used YUM to build my initial installation.
(We may well see some new problems when we try to go into production
(now imminent), but so far we've been doing okay.)
