I don't think they *need* them, though for non-trivial use it's a bit more
efficient to have local software instead of dragging the binary in from a
distant SE for every job.
My point was that if an SGM is assumed to be optional, then isn't Juan's
users.conf technically valid - albeit with one eccentrically named pool
user? How then can YAIM claim an error?
(I suppose every line must have either zero or two instances of "sgm"
might work, as long as no-one tries to create VO with that in the name...)
Requiring every VO to have an SGM (with exactly one pool account?) might
actually make things simpler and would be straightforward to check.
It's probably safer than assuming that e.g. all pool accounts are
(decimally) numbered...
