In a grid context it can be a bit different because you can have multiple
replicas, so it's perfectly possible to delete a replica opportunistically
when space is needed knowing that a future job which needs that file can
copy it in again. However, one of the many ideas which never got implemented
was the idea of a "master" replica, so at the moment you have to be quite
careful about not deleting the only copy.
