But is it worth the effort? Disk space is cheap, how many person-days is
it worth to save (say) 100 Mb of space? Anyway, as I said at the start,
looking through the list nothing jumped out at me as looking out of
place. And if individual sites start removing things then jobs will most
likely start failing in unpredictable ways. Jobs should be able to
expect to see the same clients everywhere, other than specific things
like MPI which need more support than just installing the libraries. And
if you're worried about spyware, bear in mind that jobs can come in with
any code they like in the sandbox, or downloaded from an SE (or anywhere
else for that matter as all WNs have outbound access), and of course the
VOs can install anything (a lot of which is probably duplicated, how
many copies of GEANT does a typical site have?!)
Also, as I understand it there is now a scheme to install middleware
clients as VO software for the dteam VO, in which case the whole issue
would go out of the direct control of the site.
