Maybe not, but it's true nonetheless. As we discussed a while back it's
like hiring lots of people to stand in queues for you, so whenever you
want to do something you can always go to the front :)

But the web does have reasonable security, without ssl it would be a lot
less successful, and certainly it's hard to see how ssl limited the
spread in any way. I could say it the other way around: without security
you could *only* do anonymous things, and that's pretty limiting. The
internet originally had the luxury of growing in an academic environment
where hackers weren't much of a problem; the Grid doesn't have that
freedom, and has no chance of being a success if hackers get into it.

PS Port 80 may not be firewalled, but it's often forced through a cache
and that also causes problems. https OTOH is usually open.
