Globus first does a forward lookup to resolve the supplied hostname into
an IP address, and then it does a reverse lookup to resolve the address
into the canonical hostname. It is *almost* equivalent to this:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
$ host www.cern.ch
www.cern.ch is an alias for webr2.cern.ch.
webr2.cern.ch has address 137.138.28.230
$ host 137.138.28.230
230.28.138.137.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer webr2.cern.ch.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The "host" command, however, will directly contact the DNS, while Globus will
call gethostbyname()/gethostbyaddr(), which will first consult /etc/hosts and
(if configured) YP/NIS.
Given the error message, I suspect the problem is on the SE, not on the WN.
