To all LCG Sites
The APEL Accounting package was released as part of LCG2_3_0 in December
(it had been available before) so you should all be publishing
accounting reports once you have upgraded. There is a FAQ on the GOC
accounting page http://goc.grid-support.ac.uk/Accounting which will help
you with troubleshooting when you first upgrade.
There are two other things you should know.
1. The accounting processor parses three separate log files in order to
build accounting records. These are :
Gatekeeper logs /var/log/globus-gatekeeper.log.*
Job Manager logs /var/spool/pbs/server_priv/accounting/*
System logs /var/log/messages*
Please ensure that you keep a permanent backup of all these files; once
deleted, we are unable to re-construct the accounting history for your
site. It is important to check that the log rotator does not delete
files after a finite period of time. The default behaviour of the log
rotator is to delete /var/log/messages files after 9-12 weeks, therefore
you should check for this case (especially as they must also be kept for
security audit purposes). When you configure APEL you will point it to
the log files and these will be parsed once the application is running
(assuming configuration is done as detailed in the user documentation)
and the historical data will be published to the accounting DB. If you
can reload earlier logs from backup or archive then you will publish a
longer history of use.
2. Sites which already have their historical job data in their own
database can publish this to the central accounting. CC-IN2P3 and NIKHEF
have already done this. If you would like to try this, please get in
touch.
