Prompted by a comment from Steve Traylen, I found this on the ESA web site:
"More than 474 megabits of data were received in 3 hours 44 minutes from
Huygens, including some 350 pictures collected during the descent and on the
ground"
It may have come a long way, but that's not a whole lot of data ... and from
the slightly more frank BBC web site:
"The European Space Agency said it would launch an enquiry into the loss of
one of two information channels during transmission of the probe's data.
[...] The loss of the data channel has resulted in about 350 images being
returned by the probe instead of over 700."
i.e. they did in fact lose half their data!
