(I'm not sure if this is a valid LCG-rollout issue. If it should
be cc'd into somewhere like [log in to unmask] please
do...)
Avid watchers of the SFTs will have noticed that for a long time Brunel
has been failing critical tests associated with replica management.
It turns out that these failures have been caused by a block on
connections to port 7777 that we were previously unaware of. After some
negotiation with our networks team, we have obtained agreement to remove
that restriction for outbound connections from our Grid nodes only. We
would not not be able to run an RLS server on that port at Brunel, should
the need to do so arise in the future, and we would never be able to get
that port opened for standard campus machines ... i.e. UIs for the
end-users.
It was made clear that "7777"(*) is an actively bad choice of port to
use. I don't seek to blame anyone - I myself have been looking at the LCG
port table for months without raising any problem - but it seems to me
that the imminent upheaval of Easter and of the shift to 2.4.0 at least
provides a rare opportunity to get this port changed.
An urge to gather used ports contiguously leads me to propose 8081 or
8999 or 9003. Random thump of keypad suggests 5782.
We are equally happy with any of these.
From our point of view it is critical that we get this changed.
Which of the proposed choices would other sites prefer?
What would be the best way to push forward on this matter?
Thanks
Henry
(* and indeed all other repeating digit ports... 8888, 9999 etc.)
