The Role of Health Impact Assessments in the Land Use Planning System
22nd June 2005, Imperial College, London
Description of the conference:
The conference will provide a forum for planning, public health and
environmental professionals to discuss the role of HIA in the planning system.
The aim is to set up a small working group to develop and promote guidelines on
HIA specifically for this application.
Background to the conference:
HIA is increasingly being used to assist planners and politicians with their
decision-making on a range of applications including for urban regeneration,
waste management facilities, and large residential developments. However, many
of the approaches to HIA that have evolved in recent years sit uncomfortably
within the planning system.
Sustainability lies at the heart of the new planning system, which itself is
based on the principles of putting people at the centre and using scientific
knowledge. Local planning authorities are being encouraged to consult with
Primary Care Trusts over certain application, but there is evidence that they
are not in the position to respond appropriately.
The conference aims to bring together all the professional working in this
emerging field to share experiences, discuss the issues, and move towards a
consensus on the way forward.
