Are you in a frost pocket?
Are you in the north or south.
Have you any south facing walls that can act as heat sinks and radiators for
tender plants.
I am in a frost pocket at 1000' in the West Midlands, In the country, so no
urban heat bubble. Many times -5 to -10C most winters.
I have Ecalytus and Fig growing wild in my orchard, on a 1:4 south facing
slope.
My land is terraced to the south and faces south on the side of a valley. My
house dates back to 1904. There are old stables, and an old victorian heated
greenhouse. The food was grown in and then transported by horse and cart
from my stables to the local towns. There were about 20 acres of south
facing land. I now own 2 acres, but I have the old gardeners house.
Rhododendroens, Azaleas and Camelia need 1) acid soil 2) avoid the morning
sun 3) plant in dappled shade 4) water with chelated iron.
Camelias are second only to roses in the intensity of colour. On a large
bush you may have 200 blooms. Happens March-May. Early spring colour to die
for.
Good Rhododendrons have scent. Wonderful scent that drifts on the wind. More
powerful as the bush gets bigger. Bees feeding purely on Rhododenrons make
"mad honey" with psychadelic properties. No I don't have any and have not
tried it.
So what did you have in mind?

But beware if you live in a hard water area you will need to collect
rain water for it.
I would suggest going to a proper Garden Centre / nursery and having a
chat to someone there. They are usually very knowledgeable.
Do let us know what you decide!
Cheers Geoff
