David's logic may well be reasonable (assumes filter is passive on
broadband side) but in practice the flaw lies in trying to push the
RJ11 plug into the LJ?? (can't remember the number) BT socket. I guess
you could use some form of RJ to LJ cable but in problem determination
terms that would be 'muddying the water'. Assuming you have a filter
which you know 'works' try that first. However, even if it doesn't
that doesn't mean a higher spec filter won't solve the problem.
My own feeling is that once having done all that is reasonable to
isolate any local problems, you need to escalate the problem within
AOL. If you get the same 'install a network card' response, insist on
being transferred to a supervisor. What I don't quite understand is
why AOL do not appear to have someone dealing with new installations
capable of walking you, or rather your friend/relative, through tests
to determine BT have done their bit correctly at the local exchange.
It sort of dovetails with recent news items about AOL customer numbers
being on a downturn.
