Title:  Geographic Information Manager
Location: Gloucester 
Salary: c. £24,000

British Waterways cares for and protects some 2,000 miles of the nation’s 
waterways. This network is of vital environmental and historical 
importance and we are firmly committed to ensuring that such a unique 
heritage can be enjoyed for centuries to come. As part of this commitment, 
we’re currently looking for an enthusiastic person with the skills and 
experience to drive our work forward.

Role and Requirements

The Geographic Information Manager will provide GIS expertise, advice and 
project management to the National Support Unit (NSU).
To be expert and give specialist professional leadership for environmental 
application of GIS, representing BW at government level in this field.
To be able to understand all information technology that the NSU use, 
providing advice for development or alternative solutions that fit with 
current systems and new ways of working.

Key aspects of this role are:
* Provide advice and guidance on GIS to the whole of NSU and rest of BW as 
appropriate.
* Manage & develop the large amount of data used and required by NSU and 
BW – should be empowered and able to report status and escalate issues to 
Directors or Senior Managers
* Develop novel and effective ways of making information available to all 
interested parties in BW while keeping within the corporate framework of 
systems and processes.
* Provide web development expertise & management to teams in the NSU
* Provide a national advocacy role for GIS, environmental standards and 
information management.
* Liaise with external statutory organisations, promoting collaboration, 
progressing service level agreements that are in place and developing new 
ones where appropriate.
* Support the work of the Geographical Information Group and ICT’s GIS 
Manager in promoting the use and development of GIS within BW.
* Advance national and local standards for GIS and support their 
implementation.
* Understand the key business drivers to ensure that GIS delivers real and 
relevant business benefits
* Provide technical advice and support to non GIS experts
* Promote importance of environmental consideration in all aspects of BW’s 
business and be proactive in helping to deliver a more sustainable 
approach within BW.

Key skills:
* Degree and post graduate qualification in GIS 
* At least 5 years’ experience of providing technical support and 
development of GIS, preferably in a multi-disciplinary environment.
* Project management experience
* High degree of ICT awareness and computer literacy (including knowledge 
of appropriate business software and systems)
* Experience of dealing with and motivating staff at all levels across an 
organisation
* The ability to analyse and prioritise effectively will be important, 
along with excellent communication and inter-personal skills.
* Knowledge and experience of ESRI ArcGIS and ArcSDE
* Knowledge and experience of web development using HTML, ASP and 
JavaScript
* Knowledge and experience of ESRI ArcIMS and ArcPAD would be an advantage
* Membership of an appropriate professional body
