Multibeam Echo Sounder Training on board RRS James Clark Ross:
opportunities for postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers
To help optimise future usage of the multibeam echo sounder on
RRS James Clark Ross, the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) will be
training some of its staff in the use of this system while the ship is
en route from a south coast port to Bod=F8, Norway between 19-26
August 2005. The training will be carried out in parallel with scientific
equipment trials, which will take priority. A small number of training
places are available for NERC-funded postgraduate students and
postdoctoral researchers. Training will be given in operation of the
multibeam echo sounder and sub-bottom acoustic profiler (Kongsberg
Simrad EM120 and TOPAS systems, respectively), and in the
processing of data acquired using these systems. Participants will be
responsible for finding funding to cover their own travel and
subsistence costs. Postgraduate students and postdoctoral
researchers who wish to apply for this training should send a written
justification, not exceeding 200 words, explaining how such training
would benefit their work, to Dr R D Larter at BAS ([log in to unmask]).
Applications should be accompanied by a one-page CV and a letter
of support from the applicant's supervisor or line manager. Applicants
will be selected for training on the basis of excellence of their
academic record and relevance of the training to their work. The
selection will be carried out in consultation with NERC. The deadline
for applications is 24 June. Applicants are asked to note that BAS
cannot guarantee the functionality of equipment on board RRS James
Clark Ross, and training will be provided on a best endeavours basis.
