Colleagues.
I'm very pleased to report that we are close to taking delivery of an
FG5 absolute gravimeter for permanent installation at SGF Herstmonceux.
This is a joint programme with POL and will strengthen UK work in this
field as well as providing what we hope will be a stable series of
gravity measurements to compliment the high precision space geodetic
(SLR and GNSS) measurements from Herstmonceux.
Later in the year the gravimeter will be placed in a refurbished area
in the basement of SGF. The space available allows other gravimeters to
be run alongside for comparisons / calibrations. In the meantime, while
the refurbishment is completed, the gravimeter will be housed elsewhere
on site while we become familiar with its operation and carry out
commissioning runs.
In our role as a NERC Facility, we will welcome proposals for
collaborative use of this new data set and will keep the community
informed as we move towards regular operations, hopefully by Autumn.
Vicki Smith ([log in to unmask]) will be managing this project at
Herstmonceux and should be contacted in the first instance for further
information.
We thank NERC Scientific Services and Facilities Management and our
steering committee for support of this exciting project.
Regards,
Graham
