Geosciences and the Long-term Management of Radioactive Wastes,
Geological
Society, London, Monday 9th January 2006
The Geological Society is holding a one-day meeting to help inform
public
and professional debate about the options for long-term radioactive
waste
management. In the UK, a strategy will be recommended to government by
the
Committee of Radioactive Waste Management (CoRWM) in mid-2006, and CoRWM
is
presently engaged in a broad consultation and assessment of options.
The
Society has invited speakers from key positions to give authoritative
presentations on the state of affairs in the UK, in terms of the waste
management issues, the options under consideration and their technical
basis, and also on the geoscience that's coming out of site
investigations
and research in some of the most advanced European waste repository
projects. Other speakers will provide independent overviews of the role
of
geosciences in assuring long-term safety. It promises to be a day of
intensive information, interesting geoscience and challenging
discussion.
The meeting is open to members and non-members of the Society and
students
will be especially welcome to attend and contribute to the debate about
the
direction that the UK will take in this important policy topic.
Further information about speakers is on the attached poster (please
display
or pass on to colleagues) and you can register at the Geological
Society's
website at www.geolsoc.org.uk, or contact [log in to unmask]
