Inform Seminar XXXIV
New Religious Movements
and 'Outside' Marriage
Saturday, 14 May 2005, 9.30am - 4.30pm
New Theatre, London School of Economics & Political Science
Most religions see marriage as a sacred union, celebrated by special rituals, and entailing both social and religious obligations and expectations. But what happens when one partner is 'outside' the faith of the other? When the partners are of different faiths, disparate beliefs and practices can give rise to pressures and strains within the family and the wider community. These may be particularly intense when one of the partners is the member of a new or alternative religious movement, which may itself be in tension with the rest of society.
The Seminar examines some of the potential challenges of 'mixed religious marriages' for the partners, their children and their respective religious communities. Speakers include a range of experts and people with personal experience of the situation, including members of minority religions and non-member partners.
