200 years after Britain abolished the Transatlantic Slave Trade
Tuesday 15 March 2005
British Empire & Commonwealth Museum, Bristol
10.30-6pm
A nation haunted by its past cannot reconcile its people's future...
The Transatlantic Slave Trade was unprecedented in its extent, duration and
consequences. As we move nearer to 2007, the year that marks the bicentenary
of the British parliamentary abolition of the Slave Trade, many are asking
why and how should we commemorate something that happened so long ago?
Come to the Forum, take part in workshops, and learn more about the issues
behind the Commemoration and prepare ideas and activities relevant to our
local communities for 2007. Make local and national connections help build
the global picture. The 2007 Commemorative Year presents an opportunity for
dialogue, amongst ourselves and our communities on representing and
responding to our collective past, present, and future.
This initiative is co-coordinated by National Museums Liverpool,
Anti-Slavery International and Rendezvous of Victory and supported by eleven
national and non-national museums across the country.
