for Migration (IOM)  in Geneva is offering a limited number of Visiting

Fellowships to migration experts,  and seeking for highly motivated

individuals to undertake short-term internships to produce research and

written material on a number of migration-related topics.

RESEARCH AND PUBLICATIONS DIVISION

INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR MIGRATION (IOM)

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND





The Research and Publications Division of the International Organization for 

Migration (IOM), headquartered in Geneva, is offering a limited number of 

Visiting Fellowships to migration experts to enable them to pursue a particular 

topic of research. 



IOM research contributes to a better understanding of contemporary migration 

issues, with the objective of enabling the organization and member governments 

to better respond to emerging migration challenges. Current priorities for 

research include:

- Migration and development

- Migration policy in China, Brazil, India

- The links between internal and international migration

- The effects of the Tsunami on migration

- Trafficking in persons 

- Enhancing the contribution of migration research to policy-making

- Global Migration Policy database

- Temporary labour migration programmes



The ideal candidate will have a particular interest in policy-oriented research 

and knowledge of the complex issues associated with international migration. 

He/she will have an excellent track record of publications.



Desirable qualifications: 

- Postgraduate qualification in social or political sciences, or related area

- Substantial experience in researching migration-related issues

- Excellent drafting skills in English

- Strong oral and written communication skills 

- Languages: thorough knowledge of English; working knowledge of at least one 

other IOM official language (French or Spanish) an advantage. 



The duration of Fellowships is flexible, but should ideally last between 2-6 

months. IOM will provide office space and the use of IOM facilities. 



Interested candidates should submit a completed IOM personal history form or 

their curriculum vitae, along with a letter of motivation, indicating

- Their proposed topic of study

- How the proposed study fits IOM’s research priorities

- Previous migration research experience

INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR MIGRATION (IOM)

The Research and Publications Division of the International Organization for 

Migration (IOM), headquartered in Geneva, is seeking a number of highly 

motivated individuals to undertake short-term internships, producing research 

and written material on a number of migration-related topics. 



Current priorities for research include:

- Migration and development

- Data on international migration

- The links between internal and international migration

- The migration effects of the tsunami

- Trafficking in persons 

- Global database of migration policies

- Migration policy in China

- Future of migration in Brazil.



The ideal candidate will be studying for (or have recently completed) a post-

graduate degree in social or political sciences, and have a particular interest 

in and knowledge of the complex issues associated with international migration. 

He/she will be capable of conducting independent research, as well as 

supporting the work of other colleagues in headquarters and overseas missions.



Desirable qualifications: 

- University degree in social or political sciences, or related area

- Excellent drafting skills in English

- Strong oral and written communication skills 

- Good organisational skills 

- Ability to work effectively and harmoniously with colleagues from varied 

cultures and professional backgrounds 

- Languages: thorough knowledge of English; working knowledge of at least one 

other IOM official language (French or Spanish) and advantage.



The duration of the internship is flexible and can last from 8 weeks to a 

maximum of 6 months. Internships are non-remunerated, voluntary assignments. 

IOM will grant to interns a Monthly Sustenance Allowance (MSA) as partial 

contribution to accommodation and living expenses. MSA does not apply for 

interns who receive stipends from their University, or other sources. The MSA 

for internships in Geneva ranges from CHF 1,096 to CHF 1,395 for Masters Degree 

(depending if recruited in or outside Geneva) and from CHF 1395 to  CHF 1694 

for PhD holders (same  as above).



This amount will likely not accommodate all the expenses incurred by the 

intern. Thus, all remaining costs, including travel, accommodation, and living 

expenses, must be covered by the intern or the sponsoring institution.

previous migration-related research, and particular areas of interest, by email
