SPECIAL UPDATE
New annual statistics give a global overview of UNHCR's RSD activity
On June 17, UNHCR published provisional global statistics on refugees and
asylum-seekers in 2004. Analysis of this data provides the best, most current
available picture of where UNHCR conduct refugee status determination and how
many people are affected. RSDWatch is devoting a special update to analysis of
this new information.
Highlights
a.. UNHCR received more than 75,000 individual refugee applications in 2004,
making it the largest refugee status decision-maker in the world.
b.. UNHCR performs RSD in 80 countries; two-thirds are parties to the 1951
Refugee Convention.
c.. UNHCR is the dominant refugee status decision-maker in Asia, the Middle
East and parts of Africa.
Special features
a.. UNHCR RSD applications increase, while government applications decline
b.. RSD migrates southward: UNHCR RSD is part of a larger trend in the
developing world.

the Middle East, but Malaysia remains UNHCR's largest RSD office.
