Researching migrant populations: training workshops for postgraduates
The Information Centre on Asylum and Refugees (ICAR), King’s College London,
and the ESRC Centre on Migration, Policy and Society (COMPAS), University of
Oxford, have joined forces to organise a set of training workshops tailored
towards doctoral students working in the field of migration.
The workshops, funded by the ESRC Training and Development Board, will
encourage the exchange of information and ideas between expert academics,
policymakers, practitioners and students. Recently graduated students will
also be invited to explain their experiences and the strengths and weaknesses
of the approaches that they used. Above all, participants will be given unique
training, not currently available elsewhere, on research methods particular to
the field of migration and strategies for making research relevant to policy
makers within and outside of government.
The linked events will be held around the four topics listed below.
Interactive sessions will be led by experienced trainers allowing students to
feed in their own experiences and questions whilst trying out new techniques.
There will also be an opportunity to discuss general themes and questions that
have been raised during the day with a panel of experts.
Ideally we would like the same group to attend the whole series. The group
will be kept small to encourage participants to share their experiences and
difficulties, to brainstorm possible solutions and allow the group to
experiment and practice what they have been taught.
Trainers and panellists have been invited from a range of organisations and
universities, including: Home Office, Refugee Council, Save the Children,
UNHCR, Panos, the Greater London Authority, RAPAR, North of England Refugee
Service, University of Sussex, and Queen Mary’s Evidence Centre.
