CALL FOR PAPERS

CONFERENCE ON TURBULENCES

13-15 OCTOBER 2005

ZENTRUM FÜR ALLGEMEINE SPRACHWISSENSCHAFT, BERLIN

The conference is aimed at bringing together phoneticians, phonologists

and speech engineers and all those who are currently working

on ‘turbulent’ sounds such as fricatives and affricates as well as stops

and clicks. By considering these sounds from different perspectives we

hope to gain new insights into their phonetic nature and the adequacy of

their phonological representation.

Papers which relate to the following issues are particularly welcome:

- articulation, aerodynamics, acoustics, and perception of turbulent

sounds

- speaker normalization and quantification in articulatory and

acoustic description of turbulent sounds

- signal processing specific to turbulent sounds

- the role of phonetics for explaining phonological patterns and

processes

- articulatory and/or perceptual basis for postulating phonological

features

- the adequacy of (new) phonological theories for application of

phonetic facts

Invited speakers are:

Seiji Adachi (ATR, Kyoto, Japan)

Hyunsoon Kim (Hongik University, Korea)

Jaye Padgett (University of Santa Cruz, USA)

Christine Shadle (Haskins Labs, New Haven, USA)

Submissions are solicited for the general session and for poster

presentations. Presentations will be 20 minutes, followed by 10 minutes

discussion.

The abstract should be anonymous, maximally two pages long. The author’s

name and affiliation should be indicated in the email. Deadline for

submission of abstracts is 1 July. Notification of acceptance for program

by 31 July.

Please submit your abstract as a pdf file to [log in to unmask]

University College Dublin

*** [1] Postdoc *****

The Department of Computer Science at University College Dublin has a

vacancy for one postdoctoral research fellow within a new research

project funded by Science Foundation Ireland. The project seeks to

identify speaker-specific attributes to speech which remain invariant

despite wholesale changes to speech by intentionally switching

speaking styles. Text-independent, dynamic signatures will be

particularly sought, so a background in dynamic systems as well as

solid experimental phonetics experience are both required. The

candidate will have primary responsibility for the collection of

three recorded corpora in which speakers intentionally modify their

speech towards a known target. The corpora will support both basic

and applied research into speaker identification.

Interested candidates should forward a full currriculum vitae and any

appropriate accompanying material, as well as the names and contact

details of three academic referees to

Dr Fred Cummins ([log in to unmask]).

The position is initially open for one year with the possiblilty of

extension pending funding continuation and performance review. It will

pay a taxable salary of EUR 41,000 p.a. The position is to be filled

as soon as possible.

University College Dublin is committed to promoting the continued

development of academic, employment and other policies, procedures and

practices which do not discriminate unfairly on the grounds of gender,

marital status, age, disability, race, colour, religious belief,

ethnic origin or sexual orientation.

**** [2] Postgrad ********

A funded postgraduate scholarship is currently available within the

Department of Computer Science for a PhD track student. The student

will work within the CHAINS project (CHaracterising INdividual

Speakers). This project involves the search for dynamic indices of

speaker identity which remain invariant despite substantial changes to

the speaker's style of speech. Speech corpora featuring unaltered and

altered speech will be recorded, and text-independent indices of

speaker identity sought therein.

The student must be familiar with basic digital signal processing and

capable of independenly developing speech analysis programs. A

background in phonetics is also desirable.

Interested candidates should forward a full currriculum vitae and any

appropriate accompanying material, as well as the names and contact

details of two academic referees to

Dr Fred Cummins ([log in to unmask]).

The position will pay a competitive tax-free scholarship and

fees. Applications will be accepted immediately and until the 15th of

May. No late applications will be entertained.

The goal of the project is to improve the linguistic and psychological validity of automatically generated speech intonation and facial gesture within the context of instructional dialogues. The work will combine expertise at human-machine and human-human dialogue with expertise at automatic generation of intonation and gesture. At Edinburgh, the project is housed in HCRC and TAAL.

The project addresses the problem of automatically generating speech with intonation and facial animation appropriate to its linguistic and discourse content. Working within a multi-disciplinary team, the successful candidate will participate in the design and analysis of multi-modal communication experiments that will provide basic data on the use of different communicative modalities within the same dialogue structures and information states, and will help to develop tests of the efficacy of simulated versions of human modality use.

We now seek a post-doctoral researcher for the IMAP project. Candidates must have a PhD in psycholinguistics, laboratory phonetics, computational linguistics, cognitive science or a related field of linguistics or by June, 2005, or equivalent research experience. Applicants should have a good grasp of statistics used in psycholinguistic research. The ideal candidate will have experience with analysis of prosody, of facial expression, or of discourse structure, preferably within experimental or studies of dialogue, and/or the design of dialogue annotation systems. Some UNIX-based programming skills are necessary. A willingness to develop such skills further in a computationally rich environment would be a distinct advantage. Candidates should demonstrate an interest in modelling language behaviour, good organizational skills, and an ability to manage assistants and to work to deadlines in an interdisciplinary team. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the design of dialogue experiments, to organize the systematic coding of the behaviour of human interlocutors, and to analyze the relationships holding among coding levels in various experimentally induced conditions. The post is funded for 27 months (extendable to three years) to start as soon as possible.

Teaching. This is not a teaching post. Nonetheless, there are opportunities to develop teaching skills by contributing up to several hours a week to tutoring, laboratory demonstration, or lecturing in the candidate's speciality.

Duties and main responsibilities of the post: - · Helping to plan and design experimental paradigms for multimodal data collection · Helping to develop and apply coding and annotation systems in collaboration with the principal investigators · Managing student coders and arranging quality control for coded results. · Analysing experimental results · Working with the entire JAST team to report, review, and plan portions of the project · Participating in preparation and delivery of project reports, journal articles and conference presentations.
